For Traditional Kung fu, a lot of the foundation and core techniques are built into the form. These are drilled again and again to create a muscle memory, so these become automatic type of movement. Most of the movements are trained while doing forms, which focus on creating efficiency of movement, speed and power. After you have done these well, you start to focus on the practical application.
With practical application, it requires an opponent to be able to respond to liveliness of a real situation.
